The whole tooth — finding your dentist in France

It is widely believed in France that an amber helps teething

Going to the dentist in France

You have heard people lauding about the standard of hospital care in France. What about soin des dents (dentistry)?

It is useful to know how French dentistry is similar to the UK’s — but different.

Here are some of my tips and observations about what can happen when you have a mal á dent (toothache) and need to see le dentiste.

I had plombages (fillings), canal radiculaire (root canal) and an implant. I know nothing of appareils dentaires (braces) or blanchiment dentaire (whitening).

II y a quelques différences en France!

Over two decades ago, when I had my first visite chez le dentiste (dental appointment) the experience impressed me.

Plombages dentaires blancs? — bien sûr!
Although the name of a filling in French is, ‘plombage’, which actually refers to the heavy lead in old fashioned amalgam fillings, I have never been offered an amalgam filling in France. Always white fillings as a matter of course. Back in England, white fillings were still a hefty extra.
